“Heavyweight” Billy Joe Saunders a long way from a comeback

Billy Joe Saunders returned to the gym earlier this month looking more like a heavyweight than a former super middleweight world champion.

The WBO two-weight belt holder, who lost to Saul Alvarez in May 2021 before packing on a massive pound, hopes to make a comeback soon.

Judging by the wood that needs changing, Saunders could be looking at the first half of next year before fighting again.

That will mean almost two years out of action for Billy Joe and a significant part of his career.

Taking flak for something other Brits like Callum Smith and Liam Smith did when they faced Canelo, Saunders was enjoying the fruits of his labor.

One fan said: “Billy Joe Saunders is walking around like a heavyweight. They [British fighters] still getting that payday [from Canelo] then disappearing.”

Saunders has yet to confirm what weight class will be his home when his next fight is over. However, a run at light heavyweight would be the harsher estimate.

Trying to become a three-weight king and potentially facing Josh Buatsi or Anthony Yarde if they win world titles next year would be a solid target for Saunders.

Meanwhile, the man from Hatfield returns to giving interviews after spending a lot of time in nature.

fury against joshua

Speaking about his longtime friend Tyson Fury’s potential British showdown with Anthony Joshua, Saunders had some advice for the “Gypsy King.”

“On paper, you’re going to go with Fury. You can’t write these heavyweights off though,” Saunders told talkSPORT.

“That is the reason why in this fight they are going to win hundreds of millions. Everyone goes to see it because they want to see the result.

“If Tyson goes in there and wants to destroy it, that’s the wrong move. He has to move, use his boxing, use his brain.

“Everyone has been waiting a long time for this fight. Sometimes you only get one shot at these types of fights.

“AJ is coming off a loss to Usyk. Is this the end of the world? No not really.

“I think AJ has done good things for the sport. I feel like Tyson has too much in the tank for him. He has too much experience in the elite.

“When you go in there with people like Deontay Wilder and treat them the way he treated him, that’s world championship level at its best.

“I think AJ is against it. But do I blame both of them now for making the fight? Absolutely not.”
