Harry Maguire Vows to Fight For His Place at Manchester United

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has vowed to fight for his place in the Old Trafford squad. Harry Maguire is no longer a regular starter at Manchester United, and manager Erik ten Hag prefers the central defense partnership between Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

The English international has played 14 games for Manchester United so far in the 22/23 season, seven of them as a starter and the rest as substitutes from the bench.

Of the 17 games Manchester United have played so far in the Premier League this season, Harry Maguire has only featured in seven – he missed five games due to injury and was an unused substitute in another five. Of the seven appearances he has made so far in the English top flight this season, only four have come as a starter.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has also started Luke Shaw at centre-back despite the availability of Harry Maguire in three of the Red Devils’ last five games in all competitions.

Speaking after Manchester United beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 in the EFL Cup quarter-final, Harry Maguire admitted there is a lot of competition for places in the Old Trafford squad and vowed to fight for his place.

“I felt good, I also played last week against Bournemouth,” Harry Maguire told Sky Sports after Manchester United’s win over Charlton Athletic, in which he started and featured throughout.

“I was unlucky when I came back from the World Cup, I had a serious illness, to be honest, and it hit me for a week or two. I feel good now.

“We have a lot of good centre-backs at this club, there’s a lot of competition for places and I’ll keep fighting.”

Manchester United are nine points behind Arsenal, who sit at the top of the table, four points behind Manchester City, who sit second in the Premier League points table. Meanwhile, they are level on points with Newcastle United, who sit in third place having played 18 games, one more than Man Utd.
