Guts and Glory – Morrissey Concerned with McGivern’s ‘Spirit’ not his ‘Beer Belly’

It’s what’s inside that counts, warns Jamie Morrissey [3(1)-0] as he approaches the biggest fight of his young career.

Limerick super middleweight fights Scotsman Ben McGivern [3(0)-0-1]for the BUI Celtic title in Scotland on the first of next month, and he goes into the fight knowing that, when it comes to a title fight, the most essential qualities are invisible to the eye.

McGivern isn’t the most athletic-looking boxer, small for a super middleweight and well-padded, unlike the six-foot-plus potential model that is Morrissey.

However, the Shaun Kelly-trained fighter is adamant that looks aren’t everything, pointing out that it’s all about the amount of guts on the fighter rather than the size of the fighter’s guts and claims the Scotsman’s spirit will play a role. important role in the fight for the title.

“Every attribute I have says I can beat him,” Morrissey tells Irish-boxing.com.

“I’m long, I can move well with my back foot. He’s limited, he’s small, he’s 5’8, beer belly, but he has a spirit that can’t be underestimated.”

Morrissey believes his title rival fuels his desire at some tough times in his life, and having been through some dark days himself knows how powerful that can be.

“I know he is a guy who, like me, has been down in life. He’s coming back, this is his chance to put a belt on his mantle piece and tell his son that he was a champion. He is going to be prepared to die like me, so he has the makings of a war.”

The Treaty boxer challenges for the prettiest strap in Irish boxing on October 1 at Lagoon Leisure Centre, Paisley and has a US debut scheduled for later in the month.
