Graeme Souness explains why Liverpool won’t sign Bellingham despite playing field being levelled

Graeme Souness had little positive news to offer fans of his former club, Liverpool, in his bid to land teenage superstar Jude Bellingham.

The Scotsman was in the mindset that Jurgen Klopp’s men will have a hard time signing the England international based on their current financial situation.

“I think he’s going to be an absolute star,” the Reds legend told colleagues on ITV (via Echo). “Unfortunately, I don’t think he will end up at Liverpool because unless Liverpool have other owners they won’t be able to afford him. All the greats will be behind him.”

When facing the giants of this arena in Real Madrid and Manchester City, one might be inclined to agree with the 69-year-old pundit.

That is, of course, assuming we can’t afford to increase the asking price (reported to be between €100-150m (£86.1-129.2m), according to Sky’s Florian Plettenberg Germany) for our No.1 goal.

We know wages are unlikely to be a major hurdle after Oliver Kay’s words about the player’s immaterial nature and Tom Werner’s earlier statement that Fenway’s business as usual with regard to general club operations should provide some hope that our owners will not withhold funds despite ongoing talks about a possible acquisition.

After all the constant speculation, there will be plenty of Liverpool fans bitterly disappointed if we fail to make our mark on the market over the course of the next two windows.

What better parting gift (if FSG is still the owner in the summer window) than Bellingham this summer?
