Giorgio Chiellini has defended the Manchester United center-back, Harry Maguire, amid criticism from a large part of the fans.
The 28-year-old has been poor since last season and, single-handedly, has cost United many games.
Despite being dominant from the air, Maguire lacks the speed and agility to cope with the demands of playing for United.
Erik ten Hag opted to change his defensive staff after back-to-back defeats in the first two Premier League games.
United then won four games in a row, with Lisandro Martínez and Raphael Varane as their central defense partner.
However, nine-time Serie A winner Giorgio Chiellini feels sad for the Englishman.
In an interview with The Times, he stated:
“I am sad for [Harry] The Maguire situation because he is a good player. They demand too much of him.
“Just because they paid £80m for him, does he have to be the best in the world in every match? Not well.”

“The value of the market depends on many aspects that you cannot control. It’s not your fault.”

“Okay, Maguire may not be Rio Ferdinand, but he’s good enough.”

Maguire has a lot of work to do if he is to have any chance of fitting into Ten Hag’s plans at United.
