Borussia Dortmund’s squad is undergoing several big changes in the near future, and that includes Gio Reyna. Dortmund are likely to say goodbye to some big names when their contracts come to an end. Newcomers will be able to fill the positions they leave.
No player’s future has been more debated than that of Gio Reyna. The US international has played fewer minutes this season. Therefore, he will have to decide if he impresses until June and gets a contract extension.
In the end you will have to start over somewhere else. His contract expires in 2025 and the club is surely reluctant to lose him for free.
The lack of playing time has forced Reyna to occupy the open space, a position he does not like, in the little time he has had. The player is considered an attacking midfielder and therefore it is understandable that he gets upset when assigned to a winger’s game.
Surprisingly, the 21-year-old doesn’t play longer as he seems very energetic when he does. He also provides a level of accuracy and connection with his passes that the team is severely lacking.
The youngster received praise from assistant coach Nuri Sahin. This would indicate that Sahin will be able to influence Reyna’s total minutes in the coming months.
Gio Reyna and Terzic do not see each other face to face in Dortmund
In 318 minutes of action in 11 games this season, Reyna has failed to find the back of the net for Dortmund coach Edin Terzic, giving him just two starts so far in the 2023-24 season.
Sky Germany recently stated that the player has not been in the coach’s plans this season. This is partly because he is unwilling to play as an outside midfielder, although he too has been sidelined by injuries in the past.
Unfortunately, form and fitness issues have ruined Reyna’s once promising career. A change of environment is what she needs to get back on track.
Dortmund can safely say that the American star is no longer a key player in their plans, so the January transfer window is their chance to find a way out. Otherwise, he is in danger of descending in the USMNT hierarchy just as he did before the Copa América.
Who is Gio Reyna’s new agent?
After parting ways with Wasserman a few weeks ago, the American star has signed with Jorge Mendes. In European football, people recognize the Portuguese as a “super agent”, especially for having represented Cristiano Ronaldo for 19 years.
Now, the 58-year-old coach collaborates with players like Darwin Núñez, Bernardo Silva, Rubén Días and Joao Félix. Claudio, a legendary member of the USMNT and Gio’s father, helped in talks with Mendes after he left Wasserman. This is reported by the German newspaper.
By the time the January transfer window ends, many agents will have already approached Reyna. Meanwhile, rumors have already circulated suggesting that both Sevilla and Marseille want the midfielder.
