Four-time world champions Germany have announced their 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar 2022.
Germany qualified for the tournament by finishing top of their group. Germany won nine of their ten matches and finished with twenty-seven points.
The winners of the 2014 World Cup have been drawn in Group E along with Costa Rica, Japan and Spain.
Hansi Flick’s team will begin their campaign against Japan on November 23. They will then face Spain in their second match in the group. Finally, Germany will close their group stage with a match against Costa Rica on December 2.
Mario Gotze is back in the team
Eintracht Frankfurt striker Mario Gotze, 30, became his nation’s hero when he scored the winning goal against Argentina. This goal helped Germany win the World Cup in Brazil.
Since then, he has failed to reach his potential and has not played for the national team since 2014. But this time, the striker is playing great football. For this reason, Hansi Flick has decided to call him back.
17-year-old Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko has also been named for the first time. Werder Bremen striker Niclas Fulkrug also made his debut with the national team squad.
One of the biggest exclusions from Germany’s 26-man squad is Mats Hummel. throughout his career, Hummel has been one of Germany’s most instrumental players. However, the defender is not in the best shape of him currently and has been left out of the Qatar 2022 World Cup squad.
Chelsea loan and RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner is another name that has been left out. Werner recently suffered an ankle injury that has ruled him out of the perennial event. Meanwhile, Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller will participate in their fourth World Cup.
