Gareth Southgate to stay as England national football team manager

The Football Association has confirmed that Gareth Southgate will remain as manager of the England national football team at least until EURO 2024.

Gareth Southgate, who took charge of the England national soccer team in 2016, has held the position ever since. Since becoming England manager, Gareth Southgate has led the Three Lions to the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the EURO 2020 final.

Southgate then led England to the 2022 FIFA World Cup where their campaign ended at the quarter-final stage after loss to defending world champions France. England were largely impressive during their Qatar 2022 World Cup campaign.

The Three Lions finished top of Group B with seven points from three games and advanced to the round of 16. England beat Senegal 3-0 in the round of 16, setting up a clash with France in the round of 16. England fell 2-1 to France, which knocked them out of the competition.

Following England’s exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Gareth Southgate said he needed time to make a decision about his future as manager of the Three Lions.

Southgate has now decided to continue as England manager, with the FA confirming that the 52-year-old will lead the Three Lions at EURO 2024.

“We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate will continue as England manager and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign,” said FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham.

Southgate last extended his contract with England in November 2021. His current contract runs until 2024. That means his current deal only expires after EURO 2024. His future as England manager beyond 2024 could depend on how The Three Lions play in the next edition of the UEFA European Championship.

Gareth Southgate, who came closest to guiding England to a major trophy at EURO 2020, will be looking to take his team to the next step and win the coveted tournament in Germany, the EURO 2024 host nation.
