Manchester United will be represented by three players in the England camp that will travel to Qatar for the World Cup.
Gareth Southgate chose Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw to be part of the traveling party.
As has been the case every time Maguire has been selected, there has been a huge uproar from England supporters and the media over the selection of the United captain.
Maguire lost his place in the United squad with Erik ten Hag preferring a backline partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.
Maguire hasn’t appeared as often for the Reds this season, in part due to injury and poor form. However, as long as he was fit, he mainly had to deal with a place on the bench.
This, coupled with a number of mistakes the defender was guilty of last season and this season, put Southgate in a quandary with most of the public firmly against the idea of calling up Maguire.
Criticism has been exacerbated by the fact that Serie A champions AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori was left out of the squad in favor of Maguire.
On his decision to persevere with the United captain, Southgate said others, like Tomori, had not done enough to guarantee a place on the plane.
He explained to the press: “We do not believe that young people [centre-backs] I’ve already done enough to expel the elders.
“Yes, I’m sure Harry Maguire is one of our best centre-backs.”

Not many would agree with Southgate’s assessment that Maguire is one of the best in the country defensively.
However, the 29-year-old has been largely flawless in an England shirt and was crucial in helping the Three Lions reach the European Championship final.
Hopefully, Maguire can repay Southgate’s immense faith in him and help the team achieve something significant in Qatar.
