In a great fight between Mexican boxers and candidate for fight of the year 2020, the WBC franchise super flyweight champion, Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada (43-3, 28 KOs) won by unanimous decision in twelve difficult and close against challenger Argi Cortés (23-3-2, 10 KOs) on Saturday night at the Centro de Usos Múltiples in Hermosillo, Mexico in an international Matchroom Boxing event broadcast on DAZN.
Estrada had not fought since March 2021 when he faced Román “Chocolatito” González for the WBC and WBA super flyweight titles at American Airlines Center, Dallas.
Estrada won the first three rounds but Cortes landed repeatedly with a right hand in the fourth round. Cortes gave Estrada a bloody nose in the fifth round. Estrada got serious in round seven, dropping Cortes and landing numerous huge shots. After that, Cortes lost interest in the face-to-face exchanges with el Gallo and mostly tried to box from the outside while Estrada stalked him. The scores were 115-112, 115-112, 114-113.
Cortes is trained by Hall of Famer Nacho Beristain and Estrada was with Alfredo Caballero.
According to Matchroom Boxing, Estrada will have to face “Chocolatito” Gonzalez on December 3.
“Chocolatito” González is coming off of beating Mexican Julio César Martínez by unanimous decision in twelve rounds for the WBC Super Flyweight Diamond world title last March at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego.
