MAGNO'S ABLATED MAIL SACK: FURIA-AJ, TANQUE-GARCIA, CANELO-GGG 3 MANIA

Every Thursday here on FightHype, boxing fans gather around my bulging, bulging sack in anticipation of an Ol’ Faiel money shot of sticky, salty truth. This Thursday is no different. So, put on your goggles and adjust your plastic poncho, here it comes. This week, we have comments/questions about Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury, Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia, and Canelo-GGG 3.

Fury-AJ, Tank-Ryan, Canelo-GGG

Hi, Pablo

I’ll start with the heavyweights. I’m not sold on this AJ vs. Fury fight. Fury leans into his opponents and that basically takes energy out of a fighter, AJ has shown that he can be mentally drained and adding this lean strategy makes me believe this is not a good scenario for him. The only guy I can see beating Fury is Usyk just because he might not be a set target for Fury to lay his 300+ body on.

Next, I keep reading and reading rumors that Tank vs Ryan Garcia is being traded. I don’t know what to believe since ODLH claims that he hasn’t received a call from them yet, but again, ODLH seems not interested in promoting and focuses on showing his girlfriend and publicity.

Finally, I still believe that Canelo will win against GGG, but I don’t think it will be easy. Jonathon Banks had things to say regarding his strategy and I seem to like it, basically stating that they want to prevent Canelo from responding by doubling his jab. Easier said than done though, because GGG knew that since fight 1, but I’m not sure if GGG’s arsenal includes doubling the jab (he has the best single jab and that’s a given).

Cheers

— Miguel

Hey Michael.

The Fury fight is terrible for Joshua. Anything that usually works to AJ’s benefit (size, strength, range) will be null and void against Tyson Fury. But, at this point, Team Joshua has to roll the dice and take a big risk in an all-or-nothing stab to topple Fury. He will always have a chance for a striker and if he can catch Fury in the right place at the right time, he could turn his career downward. However, he would not count on the displeasure.

Honestly, I’m not even thinking about Tank-Garcia. I don’t think anything is being discussed and I don’t think anyone wants this fight except the fans. When I see even the slightest hint of a faint sign that there is any forward movement going into this fight, I’ll start paying attention.

Golovkin will do nothing different in this fight. At this point, he’s set in his ways and he’s not likely to try anything new now. If he seriously thought he won those first two fights (and he does), why would he make any changes, other than possibly do more than he usually does?

Doubling down on the jab, using some of the jab-focused tactics that worked so well for Dmitry Bivol, would definitely benefit him. We saw a major chink in Canelo’s armor in that Bivol fight when it comes to working with a stiff, persistent jab and it would be very smart to include that in GGG’s fight strategy. For some reason, perhaps being so confident (arrogance) that he believes he can cut through an opponent’s long-range game, Canelo couldn’t solve Bivol’s jab conundrum. Golovkin is not the same type of fighter as Bivol, but he could use some of what we saw in that fight. But he won’t. Golovkin will play Golovkin’s game, such as it is…and he will lose because of it. Maybe not as decisively as some people seem to think, but he will lose pretty solidly.

Post-Canelo/GGG 3

Hello Paul.

Long time reader, first time email sender. I’m sure you’ve been asked a thousand times who will win, but my question is what do you see happening after Canelo vs. Golovkin 3. What do you see in the future for both fighters if they win or lose?

– Thomas of Tijuana

Hello Tomas.

If Canelo wins, I do NOT see him moving to fight Dmitry Bivol again. I don’t think it’s a fight he wants at all and he’s only talked about it to save face. I think he secretly hopes that Gilberto Ramirez will beat Bivol and take the Russian out of the equation entirely. Bivol is just a difficult stylistic matchup for Canelo and Canelo realized that midway through their fight. It’s not just the style that made Canelo angry, it was Bivol’s composure, focus and inability to be intimidated by Alvarez or the weight of the event.

If Canelo beats Golovkin this Saturday, I think he stays at 168 and will probably fight John Ryder if he has another option to meet Matchroom/DAZN or Jermall Charlo. If he loses, I don’t know. Maybe still John Ryder or maybe he’ll make the fight he’s accused of eluding David Benavidez. He will definitely need a rebuild if he gets beaten twice in a row.

Win or lose, I think Golovkin can retire after this fight. Maybe I’ll fight one more time to fulfill his DAZN obligations. Expect a soft touch either way.

Canelo-GGG 3 Selection

Hi Wizard.

This is fast, my friend. What happens this Saturday? Cinnamon or GGG? How?

– Damon

Hi Damon.

I think Canelo will try to stop Golovkin. Expect a lot of pressure early on. And when he sees that he’s not capable of taking out GGG (or maybe after trying some big shots looking for a stoppage), he’ll settle into the rhythm of boxing and work his way to a unanimous decision at 116-112. . Range 117-111.
