Frampton: I’d Like Golovkin To Win, But This Will Be a Decisive Canelo Victory

Former two-division world champion Carl Frampton backs Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez to retain his undisputed super middleweight crown, when he takes on Gennadiy Golovkin in a trilogy fight.

The contest takes place this coming Saturday night, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Their first meeting in 2017 was marked as a controversial twelve-round split draw. The rematch, which took place the following year, saw Canelo win a close majority decision over twelve rounds.

In the third meeting, Canelo is a huge favorite, mainly due to age and activity.

Canelo, although coming off a loss to WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry BIvol in May, is still in his prime. Golovkin is considered to be in decline.

“Canelo has to be a heavy favorite this time around even though he’s coming off a loss, as Golovkin is now 40 years old and doesn’t look like the same fighter he once was at the peak of his powers,” Frampton said. The Belfast Telegraph.

“Golovkin stopped Ryota Murata in a unification last time but he didn’t look too good early on and was having some issues. The only person neither of us can beat is Father Time and this fight seems like a few years too late to him for a real shot at winning.

“He was much easier to hit in the Murata fight, but his power helped him get the better of him in the end. He is one of the biggest punchers of this generation of fighters and that will always give him a chance, but at the top end.” . In sport it’s the small margins that make the difference and that split second of your reactions, shot speed, distance control or movement can be enough to make it a bad night.

“I would like to see Golovkin win, but I feel like this will be the most decisive win for Canelo given where they are now in their careers.”
