FOX News tweets US advances to World Cup knockout round

In a now-deleted tweet, FOX News erroneously claimed that the US had qualified for the World Cup knockout stage. The erroneous tweet also included a link to the ‘story’. MailOnline, however, was quick to spot the error.

While the USMNT played very well against mighty England, the Americans have yet to qualify for the knockout phase.

Gregg Berhalter’s team put in an admirable performance on Friday night in Qatar. Although England had much more possession, the USA were arguably the better team.

The USMNT had more total shots and better quality scoring chances as well.

However, the match against England ended in a draw. This obviously meant that the USMNT did not qualify for the knockout round. The US currently sits third in the group of four. However, they are just one point behind Iran for second place. The top two teams from each group qualify for the knockout phase.

USMNT faces a must-win match against Iran

However, Berhalter’s men can qualify for the next round of the tournament with a win against Iran. The two teams with an interesting political history meet on Tuesday, November 29.

It is essentially a playoff game for both teams. The United States must win the game to move forward. However, Iran could qualify for the knockout round with a draw.

England currently top Group B with four points, while Wales sit bottom with just the one point.

FOX coverage has had problems.

FOX’s blunder was not the first time the channel has made mistakes during the Qatar tournament. FS1 returned from their halftime commercial break late during the Denmark vs. Tunis at the beginning of the week. American viewers almost missed a great scoring opportunity for Tunisia.

FOX’s coverage has also been patchy at times. His live stream also went black several times during the early stages of the tournament.
