Former Chelsea star Gonzalo Higuain announces his retirement

Former Chelsea and Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has announced that he intends to retire from football at the end of the Major League Soccer season.

The 34-year-old announced his decision at an Inter Miami news conference on Monday alongside manager Phil Neville as he plans to end an incredible career that saw the striker play for some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

According to the Daily Mail, the Inter Miami star broke down in tears at the press conference as he thanked his family, who were present, as his current teammates looked on.

The Miami club plays next Wednesday, against Orlando City, and has two games left this season to secure a playoff spot and potentially extend Higuain’s farewell: Inter Miami is seventh in the Eastern Conference, which is the last place in the playoffs.

Higuain in tears announces his retirement

Higuaín played for seven clubs throughout his career and his longest spell was at Real Madrid, where he won a total of six trophies, including three La Liga titles.

The forward played 264 times for the La Liga giants scoring an impressive 121 goals during his time in Spain.

The Argentine star also spent much of his career in Italy with Juventus, Napoli and AC Milan, winning every trophy on offer in the country.

Higuain’s time in England was short, spending just one season with Chelsea, where he earned a Europa League medal. The striker played just 18 times for the London club, scoring five goals.

All these clubs will have fond memories of Higuaín, since football is now losing one of its mythical figures.
