Floyd Mayweather has not heeded Oscar De La Hoya’s warnings not to promote his number one fighter, Ryan Garcia.
On social media this weekend, Mayweather became De La Hoya’s worst nightmare by posting about a fight between Garcia and Rolly Romero of Mayweather Promotions.
Indeed, Mayweather declares himself in the driver’s seat to promote a world title fight between the two.
Floyd Mayweather over Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero
He said: “Ryan García against Rolly Romero. [It’s] One of the most anticipated fights of this year. I guarantee this will be action packed. This one here is bombs away!
For good measure, the boxing legend added a Mayweather Promotions hashtag at the end.
The situation gets worse for De La Hoya, who was concerned because Garcia was photographed and filmed with Mayweather earlier this month.
This led De La Hoya to initially back the move before rejecting Mayweather.
“First of all, [I don’t think] Floyd Mayweather is actively promoting and remains a promoter. I’m not sure because Al Haymon doesn’t have dates until March. So, I don’t know what Floyd Mayweather is doing in the meantime.
“In the past, in my book, there was a conflict of interest. In my day, we could let you know because promoters are talking to our fighters or poaching. But I don’t think that’s the case,” De La Hoya told Fight Hub TV.
“I think it’s great that Floyd Mayweather and Ryan Garcia are running together. He can absorb all of Floyd’s knowledge. A kid who can be among the greats,” he added to Mike Dixon of Vegas Sports Today.
From the pot
Having been informed that Garcia wanted to fight Devin Haney, De La Hoya was unaware when his top star switched to [Mayweather’s fighter] Romero the day after meeting with Mayweather.
“I have not talked with him [Garcia] which. I don’t know exactly what’s going on with him and his team.
“He has an advisor. He has other people whispering in his ear. I’m here when he wants to talk. But my specific instructions two weeks ago were, ‘Oscar, bring me Haney.'”
He then seemed to lose his composure due to the connection.
“Previously with Floyd = Ryan wants Haney. After the race with Floyd = Ryan wants Rolly,” De La Hoya noted of Garcia’s decision to break his interest in Haney on social media without informing him first.
He added: “Golden Boy has worked with Ryan Garcia since he turned professional. Together, we have made him the biggest attraction in boxing. We’ll make his fight with Rolly a big event, like we always do.
“Floyd, if you want to give Ryan the secret to ring defense, that’s great. Other than that, if you’re still a promoter, like it says here, fuck you.”
love mayweather
Expressing his opinion on wanting to be close to Mayweather, Garcia said: “Floyd is my mentor. I love him and respect him. He is so authentic, so he stops judging him. Judging a book by its cover will keep you from reading it, but Derrick James is my coach and I love him too.
“You don’t know him; most of you never will. But he is genuine, has a good heart and is extremely generous.
“Stop playing with him. He will always win. He is 50-0 and almost fifty. [in the sport]. I love him and respect him, that’s why I respect his name.
“It may be Mayweather’s money, but try to be as authentic as possible.”
García vs Romero seems to be closer than ever. Now it depends on whether De La Hoya wants to oppose it and whether the WBA will approve the event.
Additionally, Mayweather could face a lawsuit if De La Hoya feels threatened enough by losing his biggest money fighter.
