FIFA president wants to change the World Cup and fans will not be happy

FIFA president Gianni Infantino wants to hold the World Cup every three years as part of a long-term plan to revolutionize international soccer.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, which reports that the FIFA president wants a tournament to be played every year that won’t give players and fans a summer off.

Infantino’s new long-term tournament cycle would look like this: A World Cup takes place every three years, with the Club World Cup taking place one year and continental competitions such as the Eurocup and Copa América occupying the other.

The FIFA maverick is also convinced that staging the World Cup in the middle of a European winter over the last month has proven to be a game changer and could happen again in the future.

Infantino’s first change came last week as it was announced that an expanded 32-team Club World Cup would take place in 2025 despite failing to win endorsements from international players, clubs and confederations.

If these come to fruition, it would change the sport as we know it as once again more games are added to the schedule for players and it is unknown where everyone would take a break from the sport.

These changes are not expected to go down well with clubs, players and fans; However, no change is possible until after the 2030 World Cup, as talks between stakeholders on the international calendar from 2024 to 2030 are nearing completion.
