FIFA Club World Cup could be coming to the United States

The next FIFA Club World Cup could come to the United States. According to recent reports, soccer’s international governing body is seeking a new venue for the tournament. Previously, the main candidates to host were China and the United Arab Emirates. However, neither country reached a final agreement with FIFA.

There is no indication of which cities would host games at the Club World Cup in the United States.

As of early September, there is no final decision from the officer. However, the United States was placed at the head of the queue when it comes to hosting the competition. If assured, it would likely take place in February 2023. Traditionally, the tournament takes place in December each year. However, FIFA delayed the last two competitions until February of the following year, and the ‘2022’ version seems to follow suit.

Club World Cup Schedule

The scheduling dates for the next Club World Cup are something to keep in mind. It makes sense to place the FIFA Club World Cup in December each year, as it pits that year’s continental winners against each other. However, with the World Cup scheduled for November and December, FIFA may not want to rack up tournaments in quick succession. The likely schedule for the tournament in 2023 falls from February 6-12, a good two months after the World Cup.

Even then, certain competitions have time limitations. The knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League takes place on February 14 and 15. In Spain, the Copa del Rey seems to be ready for the 8th and 9th of the same month. Real Madrid is a likely candidate in both competitions. In addition, it represents UEFA in the Club World Cup. Consequently, February would be a hectic month, to say the least, for Los Blancos. The simple solution for this scenario would be for the Spanish Football Federation to move the Copa del Rey matchdays, in case Real Madrid is involved.

The FIFA Club World Cup in the United States brings changes

The 2023 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States would bring changes for a number of reasons. First of all, it would be the first time this tournament has found a host in North America. The traditional host is an Asian country, be it Japan, the United Arab Emirates or Qatar.

In addition, FIFA wants to expand the tournament to 24 teams. Previously, the competition only allowed places for the continental cup champions, plus the winners of the host’s domestic league. FIFA plans to have 24 teams in the competition divided into eight groups of three. However, UEFA wants less representation in order to participate in its own competitions.

Some teams are guaranteed to play, regardless of whether the number of teams increases. UEFA’s representative is Real Madrid. MLS’s Seattle Sounders won the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time, earning their ticket to the Club World Cup, which could well be in the United States as home-field advantage.
