The transfer window is always exciting and full of drama. It also brings chaos and confusion at times. The most memorable day of the entire transfer window period is the day of the deadline. All kinds of crazy things happen on this day and many unknown deals take place. Also, many hearts break when they move and remain in their current club.
However, a handful of star players stayed on despite widespread rumors to the contrary. We take a look at a couple of those transfers that never got through.
Large transfer that did not take place in this transfer window
Frenkie De Jong to Manchester United from Barcelona
One of the biggest transfer speculations of this window was the transfer of Frenkie De Jong. Barcelona from the beginning of the window was under strict financial conditions. In accordance with the rules and regulations of LaLiga, they had to considerably reduce their wage bill. It meant they had to get rid of some of their high earners. One of those who earned the most money in the Barcelona squad was Frenkie De Jong.
Barcelona was ready to get rid of Frenkie De Jong. On the other hand, Erik Ten Hag joined Manchester United as their manager. Erik Ten Hag wanted a new CDM and he wanted his former Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong. Manchester United were heavily linked to Frenkie De Jong during the summer transfer window.
Every day brought more and more rumours, and United even agreed to transfer him to Barcelona. Despite this, the transfer was never completed. De Jong made it immediately clear that he did not want to leave Barcelona, his “dream club”, and his position has not changed.
Bernardo Silva to Barcelona from Manchester City
Bernardo Silva to Barcelona was another rumor throughout the transfer window. Silva to Barcelona was always directly related to De Jong’s departure. The deal was complicated as it involved many elements.
First of all, Frenkie De Jong agreed to cancel his 17 million bonus that was inserted into his contract. Second, both Manchester United and Barcelona must have agreed on a transfer fee. Thirdly, De Jong agreed to join Manchester United and Barcelona would have to take Bernardo Silva. But since FDJ to Manchester United did not take place, Silva to Barcelona also collapsed.
The second opportunity came on the day of the deadline. When Barça was once again strongly linked to Bernardo Silva. This time his arrival depended on the departure of Memphis Depay. But Depay on social networks compromised his future with Barça for this current campaign. Also, as it was very late on the deadline, the Manchester City board and manager made it public that Bernardo Silva is not for sale and will remain at the Etihad Stadium.
Milan Skriniar – To Paris Saint-Germain from Inter Milan
Another deal that was speculated on throughout the summer transfer window. Milan Skriniar to PSG. PSG wanted to strengthen their defense and had identified Skriniar as their main target. PSG tried to get Skriniar during this summer transfer market. Every time PSG made an offer for Skriniar, Inter Milan rejected it. Offers started from 60 million and continued up to 100 million, but all were rejected.
Another reason for the collapse of this agreement was the financial restrictions of fair play. UEFA has found 8 clubs that violated its FFP rules. On that list, the first name was PSG and therefore they were heavily fined. The reported fine was 60 million which was challenged by PSG in court. Therefore, Skriniar moved to PSG from Inter Milan.
