Fabio Quagliarella’s career could be over following knee rupture

Unfortunately for Sampdoria, their disastrous campaign has been dealt another blow after some sad news from Turkey.

According to Calciomercato, Fabio Quagliarella suffered a severe injury during the club’s training camp.

After an aerial duel, the elderly striker landed awkwardly on his left knee, causing a heavy blow.

The report expects further evaluation and testing in the coming hours, but the initial signs are anything but encouraging.

The source notes that Sampdoria fear the worst as a cruciate ligament injury appears to be a likely possibility.

If this proves to be the case, then this injury will surely spell the end of the veteran’s season, and perhaps even his playing career, as bouncing back from these sorts of setbacks at the age of 40 would be a chore.

Last summer, Quagliarella renewed his contract with the Blucerchiati for one more season, with the feeling that this was going to be his last season with the Ligurian club.

The 39-year-old has made 12 Serie A appearances so far but has been unable to find the back of the net.

Quagliarella played for Juventus between 2010 and 2014, winning three Scudetto titles in the process. He, too, had suffered a serious injury in his first season at the club.

The 39-year-old returned to Sampdoria in 2016 after ending his spell with Torino on a controversial note.

He enjoyed a wonderful Indian summer in Luigi Ferraris and was the league’s top scorer in 2018/19 at the age of 36.
