Exclusive update on Romelu Lukaku

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the Romelu Lukaku situation, as Chelsea appear to be getting closer to appointing Christoph Freund as their new director of football.

The Blues signed Lukaku from Inter Milan just over a year ago, but he is now back on loan at the San Siro after struggling to find his best form at Stamford Bridge last season.

Still, with Thomas Tuchel recently sacked as manager, and with Freund set to take over transfers, there’s a very different regime at Chelsea now, so perhaps there’s a chance that means another chance for Lukaku to return and try to regain his place in the team.

However, writing in his exclusive CaughtOffside column today, Romano has downplayed any chance of that happening.

So far, there seems to have been no contact with Lukaku, and Romano’s current sentiment seems to be that the Belgian international is more likely to continue with Inter next season.

“Nothing has changed between Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea,” explained Romano.

“The point is the player, he is only focused on the Inter project and hopes to continue there next season as well.

On the Chelsea side no one called him, so I think the comeback is not a priority for both the club and the player.”

Chelsea fans will no doubt have mixed feelings about this: many will want to see Lukaku train after the club poured so much money into him, but surely there will also be many who now feel that the ship has sailed, and that he has shown that he is not good enough to lead the line of a top Premier League team.

Lukaku also struggled in his two years as a Manchester United player, so it may be that the Serie A style of football is more suited to him at this stage of his career.
