Exclusive: Chelsea remain keen on transfer of summer midfielder target

Chelsea remain interested in a possible transfer deal for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez after holding talks to sign him over the summer.

The Mexico international has impressed in his time in the Eredivisie, with Fabrizio Romano recently revealing that the Blues intended to take him to Stamford Bridge at the end of the summer transfer window.

Writing again in his exclusive CaughtOffside column, Romano says that Chelsea continue to have Álvarez on their target list, although it appears they have yet to make a final decision on who will be their priority for that role.

Another problem for Chelsea is that Ajax are apparently determined not to let Álvarez go in January, so Álvarez may have to wait until next summer, or else the CFC will have to look at other alternatives if they decide. who needs a new signing in the east midfield. winter.

Edson Álvarez in action for Ajax

“He has always been on Chelsea’s list, but Ajax will try to keep him at least until the end of the season,” Romano explained.

“There are no ongoing negotiations now, and Chelsea will not make any decision on the new midfielder in October; it will take a little time. It’s not easy, for sure.”

Chelsea could use some strengthening in midfield soon, as they face a worrying situation in that department at the moment, with N’Golo Kante and Jorginho out of contract at the end of the season.

Kante is also getting older and more injury-prone, so it makes sense for Chelsea to target someone like Alvarez as a long-term replacement.

The 24-year-old looks like an excellent defensive midfielder and has also played center back on occasion, so he could be a useful option for Graham Potter’s side.

However, Ajax lost manager Erik ten Hag and two star players, Antony and Lisandro Martinez, to Manchester United in the summer, so they will be desperate to avoid losing any more of their stars.
