Exclusive: Chelsea already in talks with multiple candidates after “very big surprise” with Christoph Freund

Chelsea are already working on alternatives to Christoph Freund, who surprisingly is staying at Red Bull Salzburg despite agreeing to become Stamford Bridge’s new director of football.

Everything seemed set for Freund to leave Salzburg for Chelsea, with a five-year contract ready for him, and with the Blues very surprised that they couldn’t close the deal, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Writing in his exclusive column for CaughtOffside, Romano said that Chelsea is now working on other options for the job and is talking to more than one candidate.

“It was a big surprise as the deal between Freund and Chelsea was 100% agreed on Sunday afternoon,” explained Romano.

Christoph Freund won’t join Chelsea after all

“Both sides were set to sign five-year contracts this week, but then it collapsed because Red Bull group bosses wanted to keep Freund as a major part of the project.

“It was an unbelievable situation, it changed in 24 hours, so it’s a big blow, but at the same time, Chelsea is already in contact with other candidates, more than one. The race is open.”

It seems that the names are kept secret at the moment, but one imagines that they will end up becoming public soon.
