Ex-PL manager slams Liverpool man’s actions during Brighton clash

Virgil van Dijk was to blame for Brighton’s draw against Liverpool according to Tim Sherwood.

The Reds came from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 against Roberto De Zerbi’s side, but the Seagulls equalized with less than ten minutes remaining at Anfield when Leandro Trossard scored a superb hat-trick.

The Belgian’s third goal was taken superbly well, but former Spurs and Aston Villa boss Sherwood believes one of Jurgen Klopp’s star men should have done more to prevent the goal.

“If you look at him (Van Dijk) here (for Brighton’s third goal), he just gets into position and that’s a change in focus there,” Sherwood told Premier League Productions (as quoted by The Kop). Times).

“He was very, very poor. Just go back to his position and get the correct body shape from him. He just sticks his left leg out for the clearance and the ball goes low, it’s a poor mistake for someone of his quality.”

Van Dijk is just one of the members of Klopp’s team who have struggled to reach the level that we all know they are capable of.

Last season he seemed to be back in his prime after the nasty knee injury he suffered in 2020, but his start to the new season is a concern.

Before the ball fell on Trossard to score his third of the game, the ball seemed to go under our number 4 in what should have been a fairly easy clearance.

Players like Fabinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson were below average, as was the Netherlands captain.

It was a huge flop to concede late after the boys put so much energy into an impressive comeback, but in all honesty Brighton deserved at least one point.

They were exceptional in the first half and could very well be the surprise package of this season.

Liverpool’s big problem may already have been resolved after Merson noted the international break advantage.
