Ex Man United man Dion Dublin tells of cowboy bar fight with rival fans – Man United News And Transfer News

Former Manchester United player Dion Dublin has spoken out about a fight he and his teammates had with angry Liverpool supporters.

The former striker revealed the United side came face to face with angry fans of their fiercest rivals as they celebrated a league title, The Daily Star reported.

With Sir Alex Ferguson’s men securing the first Premier League in the 1992-93 season, the Reds came to town after a day at the races.

The Reds won the league by 10 points, finishing ahead of Aston Villa, for whom Dublin would later play.

And it wasn’t just a night of drinking, as the 53-year-old commented on the Quickly Kevin podcast.

“We won the league in 1993, and Bryan Robson organized a trip to the Chester races, so let’s go to the Chester races, have a great day… this is like the end of a week of celebration, we’ve been in our open-top bus and now we’re falling behind,” he laughed.

Dublin goes on to explain how the team he only joined at the start of the season came to be amongst the rival supporters.

“Drinking is not a problem, we have been drinking for six days, so on the seventh day it is not even our turn.”

So, after enjoying their day at the races, Dion described how the team had decided to head into town for a night out. But, when they entered a hotel bar, the players were met with fierce resistance.

“We walked in and realized there were Liverpool fans, and these Liverpool fans realized it was Manchester United that had come in, so they started spitting on us,” he said.

Pandemonium ensued quickly, with Eric Cantona leading the charge up the stairs towards the Liverpool supporters.

“It was like a cowboy fight,” Dublin continued. Sharpey and me [Lee Sharpe] he ended up chasing some fans along the way. We ended up fighting outside, me and Sharpey, with two guys, he’s getting hit, I’m getting hit.

“We had this fight for about two or three minutes and then we all came forward and said, look, we better go because this is not going to be good. So we went to another bar and people cleaned their faces, cuts and bruises… So that’s what happened when we were in Chester.

Despite suffering a horrific broken leg during the season that kept him sidelined for most of the season, Dublin was obviously well integrated into the team when the madness broke.
