Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said he is happy with Diogo Dalot’s development after the Portuguese defender put in an impressive performance in their win over West Ham United.

Man Utd hosted West Ham at Old Trafford in a Premier League match on Sunday and secured a 1-0 victory over the visitors to earn another three important points.

Dalot, who has become Man Utd’s first-choice right-back under Ten Hag, produced another strong performance against West Ham. He was there from start to finish, making some key clearances and interceptions.

Speaking after the match, Ten Hag said that Dalot’s development is good, but stressed that a team like Manchester United needs two full-backs as they have a lot of games to cover.

“I am very happy with the development of Diogo [Dalot]. His defensive positioning is growing from game to game, his timing, also duals, is better from game to game and in possession I think he’s really good,” said the Man Utd manager.

“He has the breath [cardio] up and down [the flank] so the development is really good, but I have to mention that I think a club like Man Utd needs two good full-backs because we have a lot of games to cover.”

Dalot has been a constant fixture in Manchester United’s starting eleven this season. The Portuguese international has appeared in every Man Utd game so far this season.

Dalot has made 17 appearances for the Red Devils so far in the 22/23 season. He has appeared in 12 Premier League games and appeared in five Europa League games for the English team this season. He also scored a goal and provided two assists.

Dalot’s current contract with Man Utd expires next year. But the Red Devils have the option to extend his contract for another 12 months. He has also reportedly attracted transfer interest from Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Man Utd’s victory over West Ham saw them move up to fifth place in the Premier League points table. Ten Hag’s men have 23 points from 12 league games so far this season. They are just one point behind fourth-placed Newcastle United and three points behind third-placed Tottenham Hotspur, but both teams have played one more game.

Man Utd, meanwhile, are eight points behind Arsenal. The Gunners have 31 points from 12 league games this season.
