Erik ten Hag defends Bruno Fernandes’ performances this season – Man United News And Transfer News

Erik ten Hag has defended Bruno Fernandes’ recent performances but feels the midfielder can add more goals and assists to his game.

As reported in The Athletic, Ten Hag made his comments in his pre-match press conference ahead of United’s game against Tottenham Hotspur tonight.

Speaking about Fernandes, the coach said that he is very happy with the way the Portuguese has started the season.

“I think Bruno is playing very well this season. In transition, both sides, he’s doing great. I am very happy with their performances.”

Asked if United’s midfield is contributing enough goals to the team, Ten Hag added that he feels the 28-year-old can produce more performance, but his overall game is still at a high level.

“In that fact, he can produce more goals and assists. But he is often on the goal line and he is playing a big part in a lot of moments in football for us in construction, creativity and movement.” he said.

Although Ten Hag remains optimistic, the former Sporting Lisbon star’s numbers have dropped drastically over the last 12-18 months and he has only scored once in his thirteen appearances so far this season.

The drop has been consistent with his lowest numbers last year, where the midfielder struck just ten times. Compared to his first full electric campaign, in which he netted 28 wins, the drop becomes massive.

Fernandes was a revelation in his first season and may have overperformed in his early days, rather than underperformed today.

However, the Portuguese international has been frustrated at times this season, further reinforcing the argument that he is currently not performing to his full potential.

The attacking midfielder has assumed the captaincy in the absence of Harry Maguire and continues to be the axis of the team and every attacking play ends up passing through him. If Fernandes plays well, the team usually wins.

Despite the accolades, Ten Hag will be desperate for the midfielder to get close to his first season numbers as soon as possible, to boost United’s attacking threat as goals have been hard to come by thus far.
