Eden Hazard announces retirement from international football

Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from international football following a disastrous FIFA World Cup campaign. Belgium’s World Cup squad, which had superstars like Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku on its roster, failed to make it past the group stage of the competition.

Eden Hazard called him from international football at the age of 31. The La Louviere-born shooter posted a statement on his social media account, confirming the news.

He posted: “A page turns today… I want to thank you for your love. Thank you for your unparalleled support. Thank you for all this shared happiness since 2008. I have decided to end my international career. The sequence is ready. I will miss you….#onestensemble”

Eden Hazard made his international debut in 2008. He has made 126 appearances for the Red Devils so far, recording 33 goals and 36 assists. The 31-year-old attacker helped Belgium finish third at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, registering three goals and one assist in six appearances during the competition.

He won Belgian Player of the Season on three separate occasions and was also named Belgian Sportsman of the Year in 2018.

Eden Hazard was considered one of the best footballers in the world a few seasons ago. However, a transfer to Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2019 changed his fate.

He has struggled with injuries and inconsistency since making the switch and is currently among the fringes at the Estadio Bernabeu.
