Eddie Hearn is cautiously optimistic about hosting a massive Croke Park fight for Katie Taylor after positive talks with the GAA.
Hearn declared Croke Park a must-see for the Irish sporting great after her shock victory over Chantelle Cameron at the 3Arena in November.
The Matchroom chairman said the undisputed two-weight champion deserves a fight at Jones Road, and said he would do everything he could to make Taylor GAA Headquarters boxing’s first headline event since Muhammad Ali beat Al Blue Lewis in July 1972.
It’s not the first time the DAZN-aligned developer has plans for Croke Park; He had hoped to make Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano at the famed venue in 2022, but cost-related fallout meant the homecoming was downgraded to the 3Arena.
It seems that the conversations are going more smoothly this time, as Hearn revealed when speaking with Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.
“We have been in talks with Croke [Park]”Hearn told Helwani. “They are moving in the right direction. I think it’s good to say it without getting too emotional.”
The promoter, who is bringing a show with Lewis Crocker to Belfast later this month, says he will now open talks with Chantelle Cameron for a trilogy, but hinted that Serrano could be a back-up plan.
“We are going to talk to Chantelle Cameron’s team. Obviously, Amanda Serrano fights on March 2 on DAZN. Chantelle Cameron is the fight I think Katie would like. It is the fight that the fans would like. 1-1 – two tremendous fights.
“So we’ll see if we can do it. I think it’s the right fight for both of us, but we still have to come to an agreement. “We will do everything we can to see if we can achieve Taylor-Cameron in Croke Park.”
