Dortmund planning talks for a new contract for Jude Bellingham

Liverpool fans could be forgiven for getting mildly excited about Jude Bellingham’s potential transfer, but the latest reports about the player could ring alarm bells as Borussia Dortmund appear to have other plans.

Writing for CaughtOffside, Christian Falk reported: “Dortmund still has a bit of hope that Jude Bellingham can stay; They want to make him a new offer in which he would become the highest earner in the club with 15 million euros. They are planning talks in March now.

“His family is thinking about the future and they are very aware that the next step has to come in the summer because it can’t get much better for Bellingham in the Bundesliga.

“His mother, Denise, lives with him in Dortmund and is aware of everything. I don’t think she sees the future in Dortmund.

“There are still no offers for the club. Real Madrid repeatedly knocks on Bellingham’s door and everyone in Europe knows that March is the ideal time to make your feelings known. Real Madrid is ready but Dortmund have to make a clear play to try to retain the player for the fans.

“If he were to sign a new contract, they could take into account the possible departure of Marco Reus or the reduction in salary to give him a financial boost. But everyone in Dortmund knows that, and from what I hear, they are open to getting out of talks with two years left on their current contract.”

It’s certainly not good news from our perspective, as we don’t want the 19-year-old to tie up his future in Germany, nor the price inflation that would follow from him accepting a new contract with the club.

This could simply be the Bundesliga team attracting offers from all over the world, so they can start negotiations and come to an agreement so that the potential fee they receive is confirmed and reinvested in their team.

It seems very likely that we, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea will make offers this summer and then it will be up to the player and his club where he ends up.

Based on this latest report, it looks like all the interested parties are biding their time before making an initial offering, but once that happens, it’s likely to be a summer saga.

There may be short-term cause for concern if the Birmingham-born star is offered a new contract, but it seems clear that his long-term future will be far from Signal Iduna Park.
