Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight strikers Derrick Lewis and Ciryl Gane will meet TONIGHT (Saturday, August 7, 2021) at UFC 265 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas for the subtitles.
Sure, this whole intertitle situation is basically bullshit, a cheap tactic to postpone pay-per-view (PPV) purchases while a healthy Francis Ngannou sits on the sidelines. In this case, however, it might be better not to pay attention to the details and instead focus on one thing: Derrick Lewis, a powerful Texan with more jokes than techniques, could even pull a belt over his head.
It would be great.
Gane does his best to avoid this hilarious big moment that turns out to be the best candidate in his department. We have been promised many “new races” of heavyweights over the years, but Gane is the rare candidate who truly lives up to the concept as his overall skill set is sure to force the division to improve their game.
Lewis may not have many tools, but Black Beast isn’t stupid. In recent fights against Aleksei Oleinik and Curtis Blaydes, Lewis clearly outlined a strategy for his opponents, frankly plagiarizing Walt Harris’s finishing strategy against “Boa Constrictor” before planning to counter Blaydes’ habit of diving into takedowns.
Simple strategies, but if only a right hand is needed to end the fight, little more is required.
Lewis has to push against Win. If allowed, Gane will stand back and kick without committing to his punches for the full 25 minutes – he would be a fool not to! Historically, Gane tends to respond to aggression with aggression when opponents are actually trying to fight him. If Lewis can force that reaction, this is his best chance at luring Gane into a fatal shot.
