Spain, which qualified for the round of 16 after finishing second in Group E, missed all three of its penalties in the Spain-Morocco penalty shootout. While Sarabia hit the post from the penalty spot, Soler and Busquets saw their shots saved by the imposing Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

The African team converted their first two kicks in the penalty shootout before Unai Simon saved the third. However, Achraf Hakimi, taking his fourth shot, sealed his place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and confirmed Spain’s exit from the quadrennial event.

David de Gea has not played for Spain since October 2020 and therefore his exclusion from his squad for the Qatar 2022 World Cup did not come as a surprise to many.

Or, as some speculate, it could be a subtle hint from the Manchester United goalkeeper, who has impressed with the Red Devils in the 22/23 season, to Spain for not naming him in the squad for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
