Erik ten Hag’s attacking options could take another hit after it emerged Cristiano Ronaldo could face a penalty.
The FA has opened an investigation into an incident in which Ronaldo dropped a mobile phone from a fan’s hand during a loss to Everton last season.
The fan in question was only 14 years old, suffered from autism and was left with a bruised hand.
It was “alleged that the striker’s conduct after the final whistle was inappropriate and/or violent”, which would put the striker in breach of the FA’s E3 rule.
According to the ruling, players must not bring the game into disrepute “or use violent conduct, gross foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behavior, or a combination of these.”
For possibly breaking that rule, Ronaldo could face a multi-game ban in addition to a fine.
If that happens, Man United will be frayed in their attacking options.
Marcus Rashford has just returned to training today after a late knock against Everton on Sunday, while Anthony Martial was substituted in the same match following an injury sustained during warm-up.
Rashford suffered a muscle problem that also ruled him out of the England squad recently, and Martial’s entire season so far has been plagued by injuries.
United were unable to add a striker to their squad during the summer transfer window and could pay the price during a difficult October schedule.
Taking Ronaldo out of the squad, shortly after his first Premier League goal of the season, would undoubtedly be a blow for Ten Hag.
As expected, the club is prepared to fight against the possibility of a suspension.
They, nor Ronaldo, deny the event, but hope to provide context and suggest mitigating circumstances to avoid on-field repercussions from the off-field incident.
It is unclear whether such arguments will prove effective in gaining leniency from the FA, although history suggests they are unlikely to do so.
