contrasting seasons

James Franklin’s first season as Notre Dame’s head coach has not gone according to plan. The Irish go into Saturday’s game against Syracuse with just a 4-3 record. Meanwhile, Syracuse is performing above expectations and enters the game ranked 16th in NCAA football with a 6-1 record.

Notre Dame will look to build on a win against UNLV last time out, while Syracuse will look to bounce back from a tough loss to Clemson in Death Valley. It’s sure to be a close contest according to bookmakers who say Syracuse is a 2.5-point favorite in the spread. Bookmakers have set the total point line at 48 in what they hope will be a reasonably low scoring affair.

How will this game be decided?

There’s no ideal matchup for either offense to target specifically, but there could be ways for both teams to move the ball in this one.

For Notre Dame, they might consider changing the ball on the ground. They have a reasonable matchup on the left side of their offensive line and could look for running backs Chris Tyree and Logan Diggs to move that way. Tyree may get the nod as a starter, but Diggs has been outplaying him in recent weeks.

The Orange are in the middle of the pack in terms of containing the run, but they are much better at stopping the pass. However, Irish tight end Michael Mayer is a matchup nightmare for any defenseman and quarterback Drew Pyne could be looking to him to handle the passing game.

However, Syracuse has only allowed 170 passing yards per game this year. That’s enough to rank 10th in college football, so it could still be a tough day at the office for Drew Pyne.

For Syracuse, quarterback Garrett Shrader and tight end Oronde Gadsden will look to link up frequently. We’re not too keen on the other matchups, but Gadsden is a bit like its Notre Dame counterpart in that it’s a nightmare matchup for defenses.

Shrader isn’t afraid to use his legs either and that could benefit him in this one. Notre Dame is a lot like Syracuse in that its rush D is in the middle of the pack. Shrader already has six touchdowns in seven games and will look to add more on Saturday.

What are the selections?

Notre Dame might have the most consistent way of moving the ball and scoring points on this one. It could be a bit of a defensive fight though.
