Their goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, was the joint hero of the day along with the mercurial Messi.
Messi scored, assisted and converted his penalty in the shootout, while Martínez delivered two brilliant saves in the shootout.
Erik ten Hag may well be mourning the Dutch team’s departure from Qatar 2022, but there is still work to be done.

He has scored 12 goals and 14 assists. His World Cup tally ends with three goals, an impressive amount for a precocious young talent.
PSV are reportedly open to selling their star striker in January. The attacker is valued at around £50m and will likely receive a number of offers following the Dutch outfit’s departure.
Ten Hag will be eager to get United Gakpo signed before the competition. Gakpo’s direct style of play will be a welcome addition to the Red Devils locker room.
