Classy tribute from Telemundo pays tribute to Grant Wahl

Telemundo paid tribute to Grant Wahl in a very elegant way in its closing montage of the World Cup on Sunday.

The former FOX Sports reporter died suddenly after suffering an aortic aneurysm during the World Cup quarterfinal between Argentina and the Netherlands.

In its tribute to writer, author and analyst Grant Wahl, Telemundo Deportes revealed a message at the end of its closing montage of the World Cup final.

Telemundo pays tribute to Grant Wahl in World Cup montage

The main announcer Andrés Cantor had the last word, live on Telemundo Deportes:

It is customary for broadcasters to show a closing montage of the World Cup final at the end of their month-long broadcast. For example, the BBC had an amazing one. Telemundo’s was also just as good.

Thus, during the closing montage of the Telemundo World Cup final, the Spanish-language station had the following message for viewers in the United States:

He said:

In memory of our colleague and friend:

Grant Wahl-RIP”

Wahl, who was a pioneer in American soccer, was 49 years old when he died. May he rest in peace.

FOX Sports Tribute to Grant Wahl

Aside from a 60-second tribute from FOX Sports host Rob Stone, FOX Sports has been very quiet about his death on television.

The former FOX Sports reporter had criticized FOX’s decision not to report on the off-field controversies in Qatar. And since Qatar is the main sponsor of FOX’s coverage of the World Cup, it seemed that FOX Sports was reluctant to give Wahl an appropriate tribute beyond what Stone shared.

After Grant Wahl left FOX Sports, it gave him a chance to be more expressive and critical in his analysis. As a freelance reporter, like us at World Soccer Talk, he was able to speak his mind without interference from his previous employer, like FOX Sports.
