Claressa Shields Not Happy With Savannah Marshall Fight Being Postponed

By Charles Brun: Unified women’s middleweight champion Claressa Shields is upset about the postponement of her undisputed championship with WBO champion Savannah Marshall for their fight that was supposed to have taken place last Saturday night at the United Kingdom.

The contest was postponed due to the death of the queen of England and instead of carrying it out; the event was cancelled. Shields & Marshall (12-0, 10 KOs) will now square off on October 15 in the UK for middleweight supremacy.

According to promoter Dmitry Salita, undefeated IBF, WBA and WBC champion Shields went through a lot, preparing for the weigh-in and all the training she had done to prepare for the fight.

Postponing the fight probably won’t alter the outcome of the fight, as Shields is much faster and more talented than the lanky 5’11” Savannah.

Plus, Shields throws a lot more punches, which will make it impossible for the slower Marshall to match her in that department. For me, this fight has mismatch written all over it.

“She is going to deal with this like the champion that she is. She’s going to take some time off and rebuild, rethink and come out fighting on October 15th,” promoter Dmitry Salita told Boxing Social about Claressa Shields.

“Claressa is obviously upset. She had to gain weight and go through a long training camp. She is obviously quite challenging when you prepare your mind and body for the spirit of this tough challenge.

“Being thousands of miles away from home and getting in the ring to perform at such a high level, and unexpectedly, it falls apart. Obviously he is very challenging. Claressa is a true professional.

“We have to do the best we can under the circumstances. We understand that the country is in mourning. Tomorrow night was supposed to be a celebration of women’s boxing, but obviously, it’s not the right time for that.

“The fight was rescheduled and I think October 15 is going to be a phenomenal night. There is a deeper story, and it gets longer and longer. All in all, I think it’s going to turn out for the best.

“The weigh-in was at one, and the fight would not have been until tonight. [on Saturday], so it would have been safe. It’s about respecting the country we’re in and understanding the grieving process,” Shields said.
