Chelsea’s transfer policy is becoming clearer as Todd Boehly looks more to the future and wants to develop more local talent. Following the acquisition of Stamford Bridge in the summer, Boehly has offered long-term deals to Reece James and Armando Broja to secure his services. Mason Mount is also in line.
The Blues spent a world record £273m to secure the services of some of the Premier League’s best footballers. His summer window under Thomas Tuchel seemed chaotic. But after bringing in Graham Potter, they made their goal clear. Potter did an amazing job at Brighton and is well known for developing young talent.
Chelsea made 11 major summer signings this summer. Although Boehly seemed to enjoy it, they made it a priority to bring in a successful and renowned sports director. The London Blues have started making appointments in different departments, with Boehly now preferring Southampton’s Joe Shields.
Todd Boehly’s goal for Chelsea
The new Chelsea co-owner first met Shields while negotiating to sign 18-year-old Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia. Shields also has experience working with Pep Guardiola.
On the other hand, Christopher Vivel will soon be incorporated as technical director of the new Boehly Chelsea football project. His role will be very similar to that of Petr Cech. After leaving RB Leipzig a fortnight ago, Chelsea is preparing the papers to sign him. But despite this, Boehly will always remain part of the transfer image. In a recent interview, Todd Boehly showed his admiration for clubs like the Manchester City group and Red Bull.
He spoke: “We don’t expect to be the football experts to find the best talent. We are going to put those people in their place… We have talked about having a multi-club model and I would love to build the footprint.”
Link with Bellingham and Rice
Borussia Dortmund and England star Jude Bellingham is on the wish list of all the big European clubs. Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid are in the race to sign him. But Chelsea will not step aside to bring in such a talented young player according to the Evening Standard.
The same report also suggests that they are also interested in adding Declan Rice to their team. The talented British defensive midfielder was an academy player at Chelsea. But he joined West Ham in search of more opportunities and signed his professional contract there. Declan Rice is always admired by some of the Chelsea board members.
Both midfielders are on Chelsea’s wish list as the future is uncertain for the two veteran midfielders, Kante and Jorginho. Kante has been struggling with injury for quite some time.
So Chelsea wants to inject new talent to challenge the Premier League in the coming seasons and reach the level of Manchester City and Liverpool.
