Chelsea schedule talks to sign Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea are interested in completing a deal for Enzo Fernandez and are looking to secure a deal with Benfica.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues have scheduled a new round of talks for Monday and it remains to be seen if the two sides can come to an agreement regarding a January transfer.

Enzo Fernández has been a key target for the Blues this month, but they have failed to convince Benfica to lower the asking price for the 21-year-old.

The Portuguese side want the player’s €120m buyout clause to be paid, but Chelsea had hoped to sign him for a more reasonable amount.

According to Romano, Chelsea are now ready to increase their offer and reach the reported starting price of €120m. The final decision will now rest with the president of Benfica, Rui Costa.

Whether the Portuguese giants are prepared to sanction the departure of a key player so late in the window remains to be seen.

Fernández has been extremely successful since joining the club and has four goals and seven assists to his name in all competitions. The 21-year-old was also a star for his country at the World Cup. He was chosen as the best young player of the tournament.

Chelsea desperately need midfield reinforcements and Fernández would be an excellent long-term addition.

With players like Jorginho and N’Golo Kante expected to pass as free agents in the summer, the Blues need players like Fernández next season.
