Chelsea have provided an update on Wesley Fofana and Reece James, who are out of action after picking up injuries earlier this season.

Fofana suffered a knee injury during Chelsea’s 3–0 victory over AC Milan at Stamford Bridge in a Champions League group stage match. He hasn’t featured for Chelsea since. However, blues manager Graham Potter previously admitted the Frenchman could return to action before the World Cup.

Meanwhile, James suffered a knee injury during the Blues’ 2-0 win over AC Milan at the San Siro in an away Champions League group stage match. The full-back is expected to be out for eight weeks.

James’ injury against AC Milan has put his participation in the World Cup in doubt, with the quadrennial event scheduled to start on November 20. James hasn’t given up his hope of reaching the World Cup, but recently admitted his recovery is “still slow”.

The Blues released a statement on their website to provide an update on Fofana and James’ injuries. Chelsea said the two players will continue their rehabilitation programs this week in Dubai. They will be accompanied by a member of Chelsea’s medical department.

Meanwhile, Chelsea suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Blues traveled to Amex Stadium to face their manager Potter’s old team. They were outclassed by Brighton as the home team recorded an emphatic 4-1 win over the Stamford Bridge side.

Against Brighton, Chelsea trailed by three goals at halftime after a nightmarish display. Two of the three goals Chelsea conceded in that first half were own goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah.

Chelsea pulled one back early in the second half, courtesy of a Kai Havertz headed goal in the 48th minute. But the Blues couldn’t find another as Brighton scored their fourth of the game in the 90+2 minute to seal victory.

Chelsea now sit sixth in the Premier League points table with 21 points from 12 games. The west London side are 10 points behind Arsenal, who have 31 points from 12 games.

In the top four, Chelsea are three points behind Newcastle United, who are fourth. However, Newcastle United have played one more game than Chelsea.
