Chelsea legend makes great points on squad – Talk Chelsea

Chelsea are currently going through a very difficult period and although things picked up a bit at the weekend after finally picking up an away win at home to Crystal Palace, Liverpool are next for us.

We all know and see the problems, and there is never going to be just one thing. Everyone has taken a stab and given their six cent worth, but I always find it interesting to hear from ex-players who have actually played the game, to get a feel for that side of things. Especially players who played for a successful Chelsea team.

Frank Leboeuf is a Chelsea legend and former club captain, and today he has written an exclusive column for Si & Dan Talk Chelsea, and he covers a lot there and talks about current issues.

One of the things that stands out is the lack of leadership, which is absolutely explosive. There’s a real lack of that at the club, and it’s something that’s been a problem for quite some time.

Leboeuf said: “Thiago Silva is definitely a leader for me, not necessarily because of his personality but because of the way he plays as a technical leader. He shows the way to the young. César Azpilicueta because of his fighting spirit is a leader. Otherwise, I don’t see leaders there.

“I think it’s time for Mason Mount to show his character. He is a club boy, the boy who can be heard by others because he represents the club.

“And Reece James, with Reece we feel it. With Mason, I still don’t feel it. I want to see him because he is a fantastic player, we all know that”.

He’s right, we really need players to step up and become true leaders. I can also see it in both James and Mount, but we need to start seeing it now.

Another big point that stands out is that the players just haven’t tried hard enough when they’re representing Chelsea FC, something you could never accuse Leboeuf or other players on the same Chelsea team of. They played with their hearts on their sleeves and blue in their blood.

Leboeuf said: “I have not been happy with what I have been seeing. I see players making a lot of money and not doing 20% of what they should be doing.

“I’m not sure Potter has the players he wants. We all know we need a striker. I like Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, I played with his father and I love him, but I know he is not the guy we needed.”

Again, you are not absolutely wrong with this assessment, and it is good to hear it from someone who played for Chelsea and played very well for Chelsea.
