Chelsea have confirmed that Ben Chilwell is expected to miss the upcoming World Cup after the England international picked up an injury during the Blues’ Champions League match against Dinamo Zagreb.

Chilwell was stopped with a hamstring problem in added time of Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb earlier this week. Two members of Chelsea’s medical staff then helped the 25-year-old off the pitch.

Chilwell underwent a scan of his hamstring on Friday to assess the extent of the injury. Chelsea have released a statement confirming that Chilwell is expected to miss the World Cup, which starts on November 20.

Chelsea said in its statement that the result of the scan revealed that Chilwell has sustained a significant injury.

“Following the injury sustained in our recent game against Dinamo Zagreb, Ben underwent a hamstring scan,” Chelsea said in a statement posted on their official website. “The results show that Ben has suffered a major injury and unfortunately the defender is expected to miss the World Cup.

“Ben will now start a rehabilitation program with the club’s medical department.”

Chilwell’s injury is a blow to Chelsea and the England team. England is expected to announce its final World Cup squad on November 10.

Another England international and Chelsea defender, Reece James, is also currently sidelined after picking up an injury in October. James suffered a knee injury during Chelsea’s 2-0 win over AC Milan and has been out of action ever since.

However, James is hopeful of regaining his fitness and making the England squad for the World Cup.

Chelsea also sideline Wesley Fofana and N’Golo with injuries. Fofana injured his knee during Chelsea’s 3-0 win over AC Milan in the Champions League in October.

Fofana is likely to miss the World Cup but is expected to return to action when club football action resumes after the World Cup. Meanwhile, Kante will also miss the World Cup with the Frenchman out for four months.

Meanwhile, Chelsea take on Arsenal in the Premier League London derby next Sunday. The Blues will try to get the best out of Arsenal, who are the leaders of the Premier League. The Gunners sit atop the EPL points table with 31 points from 12 games. Chelsea is 10 points behind, with 21 points.
