Arriving at Stamford Bridge, Tuchel dramatically changed Chelsea’s season and made them a force in Europe. The German led the Blues to their second Champions League title by beating Manchester City in the final. The following season, Chelsea reached the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals and finished third in the EPL.

However, this time Chelsea did not have a good start to the season. The Blues have lost two of their first six EPL games. On top of that, they suffered a painful loss in their first game of the Champions League campaign against GNK Dinamo Zagreb. Following this poor result, new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly sacked Tomas Tuchel. But was that the real reason behind the German’s departure, let’s take a look.

Chelsea manager sacked: Tuchel’s story with previous clubs

Chelsea manager fired: Why was Tuchel fired?

The German coach made his senior coaching career with Mainz and five seasons with the club without a hitch. However, things changed in his sixth season when Tuchel thought that Mainz would not be able to “reinvent themselves” in the summer window and wanted to leave the club despite having another year on his contract. Later, the German managed to do so and left Mainz not exactly on a good note.

He then came to Dortmund as Jurgen Klopp’s successor. Tuchel tried his best to end Bayern’s dominance, but unfortunately he couldn’t win the league.

However, in 2017 Tuchel managed to bring the DFB Pokal back to Dortmund and was then released just three days later.

Tuchel had a very bitter relationship with CEO Joachim Watzke and the duo clashed over many things. This actually led to the sack of her.

The pattern continued again in his next term at PSG. Despite leading PSG to many trophies and a Champions League final, Tuchel had serious problems with PSG’s directors of football.

Tuchel openly criticized PSG for not signing full-backs and also letting prominent figures such as Cavani, Meunier and Thiago Silva leave the club.

However, the worst was yet to come. In December 2020, Tuchel expressed that he has now become “more of a sports politician or sports minister than a coach.” One day after this interview, Tuchel was fired.

Tuchel was at Chelsea

Tuchel then joined Chelsea. The German coach did very well as he teamed up with director Marina Granovskaia. The result was so fruitful that in half a season, Tuchel made Chelsea Champions League champions. Things were looking really good at this point.

Suddenly, however, Roman Abramovich’s penalties brought a dark period for Chelsea. At that time, Tuchel kept the team together. But he lost some key players like Rudiger and Christiansen in the process.

Boehly took over the club before the season and spent a lot of money on transfers. At that point, Granovskia left, Boehly became the club’s de facto Sporting Director, and Tuchel was given a more prominent role in the transfer and things started to get ugly.

Clearly, Tuchel never liked having so much to say on transfers. And when he was given the floor, his ideology collided with Boehly’s. The German never wanted players who were not suitable for his system, which requires a high work rate and a lot of counter pressure, but Boehly always wanted to sign marquees like Ronaldo and Neymar.

He later clashed with his own players over his starting eleven and the positions in which they were played. So the decision to fire Tuchel was borderline as Boehly understood that his coach has her own strong ideologies and will not tolerate if his demands are not met.
