Chelsea agree to pay Enzo Fernandez release clause

Chelsea are reportedly close to signing Argentine international midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

According to a report by Sky Sports, Chelsea have agreed to honor the midfielder’s record €120m release clause and it remains to be seen if they can finalize the deal before the January transfer window closes.

The 22-year-old is one of the most coveted young midfield prospects in world soccer and was a key player for Argentina when they lifted the World Cup trophy in December. Fernández has been a key player for Benfica since he joined the club in July 2022. The midfielder has 4 goals and 7 assists in all competitions and could be a sensational long-term signing for Chelsea.

The Blues desperately need midfield reinforcements and Fernández has the potential to become a world-class player.

Apart from his ability to add creativity and goals to the winger, the Argentine is an exceptional long-distance passer who works a lot defensively. Fernández can operate as both an attacking midfielder and a defensive midfielder.

The reported fee seems pretty steep at the moment, but the 22-year-old has the potential to justify the outlay in the long run.

The midfielder has a contract with Benfica until the summer of 2027, so it is understandable that the Portuguese team demands the payment of its termination clause. They are not under any pressure to take advantage of it at this time.

The blues have been very active in the transfer market this month and the signing of Fernández would be the icing on the cake for them.
