Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has revealed that most of his work is done off the pitch between games, something that has propelled him to great success in his career.
Casemiro, who has branded himself a football obsessive, told club media that he does his own analysis of matches, watching them three or four times in an effort to fine-tune his game.
The Brazilian started for the first time in the Premier League on Sunday against Everton.
He was brilliant, recovering well after an early mistake that led to Everton’s first goal in the fifth minute. Since then he has been excellent in midfield and capped off a great performance with an assist for Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal.
Casemiro said: “I watch them a lot and I enjoy it [his stats]. Yes, it is the way you learn and develop by correcting mistakes. I think it’s key to continue evolving in football”.
“I watch a lot of football. I’m lovin ‘it. My wife gets a little mad because at home there is only football! Football is my passion, it is my soul and I think that has been the key to my success. I like football. I love watching football.”
The 30-year-old indicated his leading role in the team in the exclusive interview.
“Everyone knows my work. My role is defensive, to help my teammates and get the ball from behind with quality”.
According to the player, while goals are enjoyable, he enjoys more defending and keeping the opposition out; everything else is secondary in nature.
He went on to add that the coach has enough players to get him goals. He mentioned Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford as some of the stars responsible for putting the ball in the back of the net.
United face Omonia tonight in the Europa League, which will be a new opportunity for Casemiro to expand his mark on the team and definitively mark his position in the starting eleven.
Based on the evidence of his exploits against Everton, he has earned his place ahead of Scott McTominay; now he should seek to make it his own and become unbeatable.
