Carrasco blows golden opportunity for Madrid to progress

Atletico Madrid had three last-minute chances to keep their Champions League hopes alive last night.

The Spanish team faced Bayer Leverkusen at the Metropolitan Stadium on October 26 in a must-play match to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Leverkusen took a 2-1 lead before the half-hour mark before substitute Rodrigo De Paul equalized after 50 minutes.

Madrid then had a brilliant opportunity, which came after the referee’s final whistle. The match was initially called off after 95 minutes of action, but Clement Turpin was then advised to go to the VAR monitor and check for a possible handball. He conceded the penalty.

Carrasco came forward to convert Madrid’s golden opportunity and Leverkusen’s Lukas Hradecky denied it. The rebound then hit the crossbar and Carrasco detected a second chance and went offside, which ensured Madrid’s exit from the Champions League.
