By Dan Ambrose: DAZN reports that Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin III made 1.06 million purchases worldwide, which is higher than the 550,000 to 575,000 purchases reported today by Dan Rafael.
Rafael was quick to react to the number of 1.06 million DAZN purchases, saying they were “global” numbers. The price difference between US PPV and non-US pay-per-view is significant. It costs more to buy pay-per-view in the US than it does outside of it.
Rafael points out that DAZN did not mention the total income generated by the Canelo vs. Golovkin III. Rafael believes that global purchases of 1.06 million won’t cover Canelo and Golovkin’s combined $75 million purses. If the revenue generated by DAZN matches the global PPV numbers, they are going to lose money in the fight.
It would be nice if DAZN reported the total revenue generated from the Canelo-Golovkin III fight because if it’s less than $75, then they’ve lost money on the fight.
DAZN obviously knows the real deal, and if they’re trying to cover up the real revenue made from the Canelo-Golovkin III fight, it won’t change the money they’re losing on the fight. Ultimately, they will know that they made a huge mistake by agreeing to host the Canelo vs. Golovkin III.
There would have been a lot of fan interest in seeing Canelo fight Golovkin a third time if they had done it in December 2018 or early 2019, but by waiting until 2022 to do this contest, it was already too late.
Golovkin has disappeared from boxing, from fighting uniforms and no longer gives interviews in English despite living in Southern California. Boxing fans have moved on and are not interested in seeing Canelo fight David Benavidez, Jermall Charlo and Dmitry Bivol.
Those are guys who would have an excellent chance of beating him, so he probably shows no interest in fighting them. Canelo already lost to Bivol last May and initially said that he wanted to fight an immediate rematch.
But as soon as Canelo said that, he changed his mind and decided to fight the 40-year-old Golovkin in a trilogy, which was seen as a cherry pick as his decision to go uncontested at 168 against flawed champions from Europe.
DAZN announces that #CaneloGGG3 made 1.06 million PPV purchases WORLDWIDE. My report was a disappointing 550k-575k in the US, which represents the vast majority of revenue given the MUCH lower price in all other territories. DAZN did not include the total revenue generated from the global pay-per-view. https://t.co/2zKSbjSN2L

Said @DAZNBoxing that he generated 1.06 million PPV buys through subscribers and outside purchases for @Canelo @GGGBoxing 3, a huge difference from the high of 600,000 reported to me by two industry insiders on Tuesday. The first two matches made 1.3 million and 1.1 million on @HBOboxing.

He said #Canelo–#GGG PPV buys are just 500,000. Remember, #DAZN is global, it’s important to keep in mind when trying to turn a profit, and now I’m thinking Canelo maybe overpaid, based on how difficult it is for promoters and the media to monetize Canelo fights. #Boxing

Do you really think the pay-per-view generated enough to cover both pockets of the main event? https://t.co/cMYfnakQQ4

In fact, the buy-in for fight 1 was $27 million and for fight 2 it was $24 million. Fight No. 3 will be less. https://t.co/RUJojpGFgu

Just over half of global purchases were made in the US according to DAZN’s announcement. https://t.co/Gtb20h5U3D

The first Canelo-GGG fight made 1.3 million PPV buys in the US The rematch made 1.1 million PPV buys in the US The third will be between 550k-575k in the US ., according to the sources. DAZN’s announcement of 1.06 million is PPV purchases for EVERYONE. Apples to oranges.
