Canelo Says He Thinks Crawford Beats Spence, Suggests Patience Is Key to Beating Crawford

One of the most intriguing fights in American boxing has yet to come to fruition, but that hasn’t stopped Canelo Alvarez from doing his bit.

The Mexican superstar recently weighed in on the hypothetical matchup of the day that has been on the lips of boxing fans for the past several months, an undisputed welterweight bout between Terence Crawford (WBO) of Omaha, Nebraska and Errol Spence Jr of Desoto, Texas. . The two fighters have been in negotiations, with various reports suggesting they will meet at the end of the year, but the match has yet to be officially confirmed.

If it materializes, Alvarez believes “Bud” will pull off the victory, citing the fighter’s versatility and intellect.

“It’s a really good fight,” Alvarez said of Spence-Crawford in an interview with FightHubTV during a public workout. “Two great fighters. I think it’s going to be a very good fight. I don’t think it’s disrespectful, but I think Crawford [wins].”

“He (Crawford) has a lot of skill and power,” Alvarez continued. “He’s a really smart fighter.”

In a separate interview with a different outlet, Alvarez noted that Crawford’s ability to shift his stance is another crucial reason why he believes the Nebraskans will beat Spence.

“I think Crawford (wins), because he goes southpaw,” Alvarez told FightHype.com. “I think he is a very difficult fighter.”

Alverez also gave Spence some advice, that digging to the body against an elusive fighter like Crawford will be key for the Texan.

“Just be patient,” Alvarez said. “Set up [yourself] as always and patience, working the body. Being patient is the key. Everyone is looking at the head and it is very difficult to hit the head. [of] that kind of fighter.”

Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) is scheduled to defend his WBO, WBA, WBC and IBF 168-pound titles in an undisputed super middleweight trilogy against Gennadiy Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs). On September 1. 17 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on DAZN Pay-Per-View.
