Canelo on Golovkin’s Late Rally: It Didn’t Surprise Me, He’s a Strong Fighter

T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas – In his anticipated trilogy, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) was too young and too good, as he dominated Gennadiy Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs). ). ) for most of the fight by twelve round unanimous decision to retain the undisputed super middleweight crown.

The scores were 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113.

Their first fight, in 2017, ended in a controversial twelve-round split draw. The 2018 rematch saw Canelo win a very close majority decision over twelve rounds. Both bouts took place in the middleweight division.

Canelo bounced back after suffering the first loss of his career since 2013.

In May, he was outpointed in twelve rounds by WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.

After winning the trilogy fight, Canelo ended his rivalry with Golovkin by thanking him for the 36 rounds they shared in the ring.

“Thank you very much mate, thank you Golovkin, thank you for everything,” Canelo said. “We gave the fans three good fights. Thanks for everything. Thank you very much for your support. I have been through very difficult things in my life. The only thing you can do is keep moving forward. I’ve been through tough times with my loss. But losses can show how you can be great, how you can come back and show humility.”

Golovkin did very little in the first eight rounds of the fight, but he stepped up his activity level in the final four rounds.

The Mexican star was not affected by Golovkin’s recovery attempt in the later rounds.

“I wasn’t surprised,” Canelo said. “I know him… he is a strong fighter. For me, I’m happy to share the ring with him. He is a very good fighter. I’m glad to be involved in that kind of fight.”
