By Dan Ambrose: Gennadiy Golovkin’s brother, Max Golovkin, says he and the team see Canelo Alvarez as an “average fighter” from Mexico.
Max Golovkin says that Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) has gotten to where he is today because of the way he has been promoted.
Max’s label that the 32-year-old Canelo is just an “average fighter” would ring true if one looked at how lost he was against Dmitry Bivol, Erislandy Lara, Golovkin and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Canelo was outclassed by Golovkin in both of his fights, as well as against the aforementioned fighters.
Interestingly, Canelo only has two losses in those five fights, which suggests that the judges were VERY generous in scoring the fights for his benefit, all of which took place in Las Vegas.
“I think we trained together in camp a couple of times. It was a long time ago. He was a different fighter, and I was a different fighter. It was a different time,” Gennadiy Golovkin told DAZN’s ‘The Making of the Trilogy’ about his fight this Saturday night against Canelo Alvarez.
“I was the most experienced. We were fighting each other. I was the most experienced. I remember the sparring sessions. At that time, he was a young fighter. He was not who he is now,” Golovkin said of his initial training session with a young Canelo.
“It looked like we were going to have a great fight,” Golovkin said of his first fight with Canelo in 2017. “It was my first time at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
“Basically, I felt confident. I was calm because I was sure of myself and I was very committed to the fight. I felt very comfortable,” Golovkin said.
“He had become more experienced. He had aged and improved as a boxer, that was for sure.
“They didn’t want to fight Golovkin. They dragged him. They were ashamed of that fight, they were ashamed at the end and they dragged it out,” Matthew Macklin said of Team Canelo.
“They waited for Golovkin to get a little older, a little older, a little older. ”
“I personally consider Canelo to be just an average fighter. That’s how Gennadiy and our team see it,” said Golovkin’s brother, Max Golovkin.
“He is just your average Mexican boxer who has been promoted to the top. But we know who he is and what his team is.”
