Canelo: I Really Wanted Bivol Rematch, But Hearn Said We Had Contract To Fight Golovkin

LAS VEGAS – Canelo Alvarez reiterated that he eventually wants to avenge his loss to Dmitry Bivol.

According to Alvarez, he would have fought Bivol again on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena were it not for the contractual commitment he made prior to fighting Bivol on May 7 to face Gennadiy Golovkin for the third time. DAZN committed a large amount of money in guarantees for Alvarez and Golovkin to finally fight again, so Alvarez will have to try to secure a second chance against Bivol at a later date.

“I really wanted the rematch in September,” Alvarez told a group of reporters Wednesday at the MGM Grand. “

But Eddie Hearn said we have the contract to fight Golovkin in September and we need to make that fight. So that’s why we’re here. And I’m happy.

Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing is Alvarez’s promoter at the moment and has an exclusive content deal with DAZN. Sand.

Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KO) insisted that fighting Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KO) to complete his trilogy is not an indication that he doesn’t want to climb back up to the light heavyweight division again. to challenge Russia’s Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) for his WBA belt.

“I really want him,” Alvarez said, “but finally my team and I decided to fight Golovkin.”

Hearn emphasized during the aforementioned group interview that Alvarez “has also signed a deal to fight Gennadiy Golovkin.”

Alvarez added that he will be paying close attention to Bivol’s mandatory title defense against Gilberto Ramirez (44-0, 30 KOs) on November 5 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Guadalajara’s Alvarez admitted that he will root for his compatriot to beat Bivol in another 12-round main event to be broadcast on DAZN.

“We’ll see,” Alvarez said. “[Bivol] I need to win first, but I want [a rematch] sooner or later. I think first we have to see what happens in that fight, with ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez. I want ‘Zurdo’ Ramírez to win, so we’ll see. We’ll see. I am 100 percent focused on this fight, and then we will see.”

Alvarez, 32, and Golovkin, 40, will battle for Alvarez’s IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles in this main event on DAZN Pay-Per-View ($64.99 subscribers; $84.99 for non-subscribers). Four years after winning his middleweight championship rematch by majority decision, most sportsbooks list Alvarez as at least a 5-1 favorite to beat Golovkin again.
